Multiple Solutions!

Hey Boss...

Today's thought is:
Handle problems with MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS.

Sometimes there are problems that just
won't easily respond to ONE SOLUTION.
Instead - hit it with MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS.

Here's an example:

Let's say there's a project that just isn't
getting done. A single solution might be
to put time on the calendar to work on it.

BUT....

You've tried that before and it DOESN'T WORK!

Try this instead:

Schedule time on the calendar. Make sure that
it's a time when you could have someone else
come work on it with you. Tell the person
working on it with you that there's a REWARD
that you've already decided on when the project
is complete, and you want them to share that
reward with you.

Now you'll get the project done, have some quality
time with that person, and enjoy a great
dinner out.

Just tell me that the project won't get
done now!!!!

DO ONE DAY'S WORK, EACH DAY!!

In the States, it's a SHORT WEEK.
Only four work days then a holiday!!!

A lot a people bring a lot of bad
mojo into the week by following this
belief:
"I'VE GOT TO DO 5 DAYS WORTH OF WORK IN 4 DAYS!"

Nothing should be further from the truth.

Everything we do doesn't revolve around the
same amount of work being done every 5 calendar days!

So....

All you've got to do is: ONE DAY'S WORK EACH DAY.

Doesn't that feel a bit better????

Commitment

Hello there, Boss...

Here's an old saying that needs to be repeated:

RESOURCES FOLLOW COMMITMENT

Hmmmm.....

Breaking that down, it means:
We'll figure out HOW later....
Let's just be sure on WHAT first...

Know exactly "WHAT" it is that you're going to create.
Then commit to it.
And notice the word "COMMIT".

This is the KEY WORD in the entire discussion.
Committing to something is more than just
"I'll head that way if everything else works out"
or
"I sure hope that's the outcome"...

We're talking COMMITTING. In the end, there will be
no other outcome. That is commitment.

Let's find other businesses that would benefit by

And the end result isn't just more for each partner,
it's more for our customers as well...

Let's find a company that's doing something really cool,
and THINK of a way that we could work together to bring
that idea into/through our business to the world.

What we're doing here is INVENTING a new use or application
for something that you already like...

really like - and then think of how to package it with

USE IT or LOSE IT!

Every day you can listen to TRAFFIC REPORTS.
Someone collects the info (or flies around a city)
to get the best knowledge possible for commuters.

So let's think about this...

For most people, they don't have an alternative
route to work. Mostly, they're getting the traffic
report so that they'll know how much of a delay there
will be.
AND...
It isn't that they'll actually get out of the house
any earlier - they already have their morning PACKED!!!

So Boss...
Why am I talking about TRAFFIC REPORTS today???

Because they're essentially USELESS!!!!!!

Do we have any "TRAFFIC REPORTS" in our business???
Things that we do just to have information that
we NEVER USE????

If so - let's USE IT or LOSE IT...

9) It has nice memories displayed - like pictures/trophies
10) When they're there, it feels good

MAY DAY MAY DAY!!.....or not

Happy May Day, Boss....

You may not know this, but...
In many countries of the world,
today is LABOR DAY!

May Day is celebrated because
this was the start of the
EIGHT HOUR WORK DAY, an absolute
win for the labor movement.

The Industrial Revolution brought along
big factories, and with them - LONG work days.
Some of the companies required 10-16 hour
work days - seven days a week.

Now, the only people that really put in
days like that - are BUSINESS OWNERS
JUST LIKE YOU!!!!

OK - there may be a couple of physicians in
training and a few other jobs that have to
go for a LONG DAY - but for the most part...
It's people like you that continue to work
long after MAY DAY "freed you"!

Break down the time spent each day into categories like:

Creating, Customer Development, Volunteer.....
You get the idea - make some more categories that
you'd really like to include...

Then...

At the end of the month - let's see how much time
you really do spend running me.
This may be really eye-opening for you, to see
exactly where your time goes!

Today we talk ACCOUNTABILITY, Boss...

There are a LOT of people who are ACCOUNTABLE
to someone and in a many ways, that
helps them to complete things.

I'm just wondering...

How do you handle YOUR Accountability???

Have you set up your own ways of remaining
accountable for what you do?

AND...

Is it enough???

Sometimes it's hard to be accountable
only to yourself. You will believe your own
"reasoning" for not completing tasks.
You may be a bit too easy on yourself and let
things slip.

Conversely...

You may be so tough on yourself and your
deadlines that you drive yourself TOO HARD.
Wouldn't it be nice to have someone tell
you to "slow down a bit"???

The important thing is - DOES IT WORK FOR YOU????

Habits To Stop Doing!

Hello Boss...

So often, I'm writing to you about things
to ADD to our work together.

Today, I'm going to ask you the opposite!

Is there something that you do, either a
habit that you have, or a way of doing things,
that YOU DON'T REALLY LIKE????

Let's DROP IT!

Yes, DROP IT. Stop doing it. Walk away!

Just remember, that it may not be easy to
change. Some psychologist somewhere said
that it takes about a month to MAKE a new
habit and get it in place. I'm guessing
that it will probably take about a month
to BREAK one as well....

Soooo.....

MUST MAINTAIN SERVICE STANDARDS!

I've got to tell you, Boss...

Sometimes you do things that are very
easily MISINTERPRETED by others.
And...
You really need to be aware of this because
sometimes the effects of it are - well -
DIFFICULT!

Here's an example....

Let's take a time when we're SWAMPED.
We're workin' straight out for days at a time.
Well...
When we're like that - sometimes we don't answer
EMAILS promptly or return phone calls promptly.
That can be misinterpreted by the people that
wrote or called us.
They could think we don't care.
They could think we don't appreciate them.
They could feel neglected.

So....

Even when we're busy, we have to maintain all of
our service standards, OK????

EASE UP!

Ya gotta know when to EASE UP, Boss!

That's right... EASE UP.

Sometimes you tend to ride yourself a bit too hard!
Sometimes you're just ruthless in how much
you expect from yourself.

Well...

Remember - when you're SICK - EASE UP!
It does you no good to work when you're not well.
AND...
It does you no good to be hard on yourself when
you're not feeling well.

Heck, if you were an employee and not THE BOSS,
you'd be JUST FINE relaxin' and taking it slow
when you weren't up to par.

So...

Give yourself the permission to be sick when you're sick!

Got it???

Sometimes the week just plain "RUNS OUT"
before all the work gets done.
And sometimes it just ends up being
that way.

I know you had intentions, GREAT INTENTIONS
about what would be done this week.
I know you're a bit unhappy that they didn't
all fall into place.

But remember...

You worked HARD and SMART this week.
You really did put in a good one.

So maybe...

Just adjust some of your intentions.
You often expect a LOT from yourself, more
than you would anyone else....

Final word? BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF.

Know When To PUSH, Know When To REST!

I know that sometimes I push pretty hard.
And sometimes, you do too!!!

So the important thing, Boss...
Is to be able to RECOGNIZE WHEN WE'RE TIRED.

That's right - there's a skill in this...

And you know it - because sometimes when
you're tired you continue to push.
And what comes out of that????
NOTHING GOOD!!!!

So....

Listen to your body.
When it's time to rest - REST!!!!
The work that you do with a rested
mind and body is FAR SUPERIOR to the work
you'll do when you're POOPED!

In summary....

Know when to push and know when to rest!

The Dilemma du jour, Boss...

The Problem of the Day is:
What do you do when you have multiple
trusted advisors...
ALL SAYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT????

Here's my two cents....

Go with your GUT!
You didn't get where you are without having
a pretty dang good sense of what works for you.
That instinct of yours has kept you in
the right place for a LONG TIME.

TRUST YOUR GUT...

Remember - the advisors, trusted though
they may be - are only ADVISORS.
They don't know what's best for you....
YOU DO!!!

So - Make your decision and feel good about it!

YA GOTTA CLEAN SOMETHING UP!

So Boss....

Sometimes in order to get things done...
Before we can create something new...

YA GOTTA CLEAN SOMETHING UP!

Yes... You know what I mean.
Let's take an example of
building a new model car...
(Just go with me here, OK??)

You need to be able to spread out.
You have to clean up the workbench.
You need to start from a clean space.

So...

How does that apply to you?
What do you need to clean up so that
you can get going on the next big project?

Go identify what needs to be CLEAN.

Clean it up - and GET GOING!

Do You Have Procedures In Place?

I HATE to mention this, Boss...

But I'm wondering if we have to put
some procedures in place...

How can we be sure that no one
is STEALING? And it isn't only
money - it's TIME, PRODUCTS, ETC...

We only work with really great people.

Set Your Goals

OK... Yesterday we set the
SHOWCASE GOAL for next year.
Today we fill in the rest of them.

And the best way to do that, Boss
is to set intentions in broad areas.

Set goals and intentions that cover
main points only. Here are some
examples:

BUSINESS:
Financial - Goal is $$$$$ in gross revenue.
Marketing - Goal is to attract XXX new customers.
Business Internal - Goal is to be LEAN with no
redundant work.
Schedule - Goal is to work XX hours each week.
Project A - Goal is to finish by first quarter.

PERSONAL:
Personal - Goal is to fit into size zzz clothes.
Health - Goal is to work out 5 times each week.
Travel - Goal is to travel to a new continent I've
never seen before.

OK. You get the hang of it???
Now go set ours for next year!

A Showcase Goal

Since we're still working on creating
next year's goals, one of the things

Creating a SHOWCASE GOAL.

Showcase Goal????

Yes, the one that will be a CENTERPIECE,
a real focal point for the year.

Along with the other goals for the year,
this one should be FRONT and CENTER.
This is the one that we put at the top
of the list. This one has a WOW FACTOR!

And...

This doesn't have to be something that is
completed by the end of the year, but something
that will be exciting to work on and
proud for you to put on the top of the list.

WORKING, and working well.

For cryin' out loud - throw out that old
Palm Pilot from 1998 that hasn't worked
in five years.

Throw away that old telephone system that
we replaced two years ago, but is sitting on
the shelf!

And why are you keeping that old tape recorder?
The one that was supposed to be "high tech"
because it uses micro-cassettes!!!!

'Do It' or 'Pay Someone Else To'. That is the question.

Sometimes though - you try to do too much!!!
You take on FAR MORE than you should.

Yes, there is a way to handle this....

GET HELP!!!!

Some of the things that you do - really should
be done by someone else! You don't have
to do EVERYTHING that isn't already handled.
Your job is to make sure that it GETS DONE, not
do it yourself!

So....

Look through the list of "TO DO's".
Figure out which of those things you have
to do yourself, and get rid of the rest!!!

It is SO much easier to pay someone
than to have you be overworked.

LESSONS From Baseball!

More LESSONS FROM BASEBALL, Boss...

One of the Cleveland team's players made an
interesting quote to the press before they
played the last two games in Boston:
"The champagne tastes just as good on the road
as it does at home".

WELL NOW....

One of the things that happened was...
That very quote was put on the BOSTON team's
locker room door.

What did that do????

Well...

It reminded everyone on that team that they
wanted that Cleveland player to eat those words.

It worked!!!!

Teamwork

Back-to-School

Hellloooooo Boss!!!!

I know that we're not exactly in the type
of business that does
BACK TO SCHOOL sales....

However....

I'm just wondering if there isn't something
that we can play off of here.....

Back to school also means:
No more family vacations...
The end of summer... (sigh)
People are ready to WORK again...
People are ready the THINK again...

So...

Put on your thinking cap and figure out
if there's something we should be doing, OK???

Reflect Values In Your Work!

So Boss....

Yesterday I asked you to make a list
of your values, the things that are simply
essential for you...

TODAY....

Today I want to know:
Are these VALUES reflected in our work???
Do they show up???
Are you living these values?

And...

If the answer to any of the above is "NO"...

We better change somethin'...

Bring your values into everything you do.
That's when you'll love every moment of every day.

Customer Expectations

So often, our customers have NO IDEA what
is going to happen and in what order....

And Boss....
We really ought to clue them in
on that....

Seriously....
Let's tell them exactly what to expect
through every step of our time with them.

The more that they know up front, the
easier it is for them to accept everything
that needs to happen....

I just think this is the right way
to work with our customers...

needs - LUCK!

I know. I know.
Sometimes you don't feel so Lucky, Boss.

Let's Get Creative!

Hi there, Boss....

I thought maybe we'd spend the week looking at
some of the INTERNAL components of being very
successful in business.

Today we talk - CREATIVITY...

I'm sure you had to be very creative in order
to get started working on me, Boss...

And...

You have to make sure that your creativity
is always present.....

It helps you to develop new ideas....
It helps you to work on me so that I can
be more efficient...
It helps you to find new ways to get customers...

How do you develop that CREATIVITY????

By spending more time being AWAY from the day to day..
