Things are always changing, Boss.

And one of the changes that is going on is:

NOTES FROM YOUR BUSINESS will no longer be
a daily publication.

It's funny that last week's note talked about
BURNOUT. That isn't the primary reason,
but...
I've been writing these little notes for
two and a half years now.

And I've found that I've said a lot about
business from the business' point of view.

I'm going to be making some changes and doing
some writing and recording from MY POINT OF VIEW.

So....

What does this mean to you???

Well...

Multiple Solutions!

Hey Boss...

Today's thought is:
Handle problems with MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS.

Sometimes there are problems that just
won't easily respond to ONE SOLUTION.
Instead - hit it with MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS.

Here's an example:

Let's say there's a project that just isn't
getting done. A single solution might be
to put time on the calendar to work on it.

BUT....

You've tried that before and it DOESN'T WORK!

Try this instead:

Schedule time on the calendar. Make sure that
it's a time when you could have someone else
come work on it with you. Tell the person
working on it with you that there's a REWARD
that you've already decided on when the project
is complete, and you want them to share that
reward with you.

Now you'll get the project done, have some quality
time with that person, and enjoy a great
dinner out.

Just tell me that the project won't get
done now!!!!

Actually we examine YOUR GENEROSITY.

I've been wondering how generous
you feel you've been lately.
Just to remind you, there are a few
different ways to be generous:
TIME, TALENT and TREASURE.

Take a look at each one.
Have you been generous with your TIME?
Have you shared your TALENT?
Have you been financially generous?

Oh wait. I can hear your question...
WHO am I supposed to be generous with???
How about all the people, and organizations
that you touch?

Take a quick look at who is IN NEED and
then ask what are they IN NEED OF??

Chewable Chunks

It's CHEWABLE CHUNK MONDAY, Boss!!!

Yup. Today is the day that we look at something
that has just been over your head for too long.
This is a project that you just haven't
been able to even START!
And you're not too dang happy that it is still
not done.

Got it? Got that project in mind???

Take FIVE MINUTES and figure out the FIRST STEPS
that you'll need to take.

Then set aside TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES to actually
do one of those first steps.

So...

Total investment into this project today is
THIRTY MINUTES.

When you've finished those thirty minutes....
I think you'll be amazed at how much is done.

Now go do it.

TONE IN EMAIL!!!

Hello there, Boss...

One of the things that is EASILY MISUNDERSTOOD
is: TONE IN EMAIL.

There are so many ways that we
use our voice when we communicate
verbally.... And our voice can
completely change the meaning of our message.

NOT TRUE IN EMAIL!!!!!

When you write email, the receiver hears the
message in THEIR OWN VOICE, NOT YOURS!!!!!

So....

If you have any hidden nudges or meaning in that
email, it can be easily misread.

And the one thing we're ALWAYS striving for????

OPEN and HONEST COMMUNICATION

knucklehead.

You worry, you pout, you compare yourself
to others. You wonder why you don't

Continuously Train!

Hey Boss...

One of the problems with growing a
business is: Having your employees
communicate with the world the way
that YOU would.

That's why it is so very essential
that you CONTINUOUSLY TRAIN.

That's right. You can't just have
one training session on a given
subject and then expect everyone
to fall into lock step with you.

The hard part comes when you
have to make sure that your
continuous training doesn't become
continuously boring. That's where
you have to come in and make it
SHINE.

So....

It seems that I've noticed you shying
away from decision and action more often
than I ever have before...

In "THE OLD DAYS", you would have jumped
right in, made a decision and fixed the
problem or handled the issue that
needed handling.

And now - I notice you holding back.

You know what's amazing though????

I get the feeling that you don't want
to hold back at all.

So...

on something that you never would have

LUCKY And Amazing!

Those are LUCKY NUMBERS.

And exactly what should you do
with a LUCKY NUMBER day????

Well - here's one suggestion:

Treat the entire day, and everything
that happens as if that was just the
luckiest and most amazing thing that
could happen.

Every phone call, every email, every
conversation - LUCKY and AMAZING.

If you can keep this attitude all
day long, you're going to think back
to this little note and think that
it was just LUCKY and AMAZING - but that
isn't the truth. The truth is:

YOUR ATTITUDE CREATES THE LUCK YOUR
ABILITY TO BE AMAZED.

One of the things that I've noticed
that you just haven't gotten the
hang of is...

SCHEDEULING PROJECT TIME

You'll put a little bit of time
to your projects when you absolutely
have to, but...
then you've let the projects slide
a bit too often.

So...

Let's try this:
Take a few minutes today to look at the
outstanding projects you have.
Then...
Schedule each one with a HALF HOUR
on your calendar for this week.
AND...
Follow through on those half hour
commitments.

It's important to remember
that one of the best things that you do
is TAKE TIME TO MAKE GREAT DECISIONS!!!

Sometimes you make your decisions a bit
too quick, and then - WE PAY FOR THEM!

Remember to slow down, and think things
out. When you do that - you always come
up with the right one.

And if you want to really make sure....
Sleep on it!
Let your mind turn it over and over during
the night. The next day's decision is
usually ten times clearer.

Loyal Customers Spread the Word

Ready for a little story, Jerry???

Once upon a time there was a nice
customer named Sally. Sally was actually
a great customer who did a lot of business with Jerry.

One day, Sally had a fairly small problem,
and she brought it to Jerry. Jerry handled the problem in
no time, and Sally couldn't have been happier.

Sally opened up her pocketbook to pay, but
Jerry quickly refused. Jerry went on to say
"Hey Sally - I'll just add it on to whatever your
bill is next time."

Sally smiled and thanked Jerry even though
she knew that Jerry wasn't going to charge
her at all.

Sally not only smiles every time she thinks of Jerry,
she also remembers to tell her friends what a
great business Jerry owns.

Nothing should be further from the truth.

Everything we do doesn't revolve around the
same amount of work being done every 5 calendar days!

So....

All you've got to do is: ONE DAY'S WORK EACH DAY.

Doesn't that feel a bit better????

Commitment

Hello there, Boss...

Here's an old saying that needs to be repeated:

RESOURCES FOLLOW COMMITMENT

Hmmmm.....

Breaking that down, it means:
We'll figure out HOW later....
Let's just be sure on WHAT first...

Know exactly "WHAT" it is that you're going to create.
Then commit to it.
And notice the word "COMMIT".

This is the KEY WORD in the entire discussion.
Committing to something is more than just
"I'll head that way if everything else works out"
or
"I sure hope that's the outcome"...

We're talking COMMITTING. In the end, there will be
no other outcome. That is commitment.

Well it's official, Boss...

Summer means a lot of things to a lot of people
and businesses.
For some - it's VACATION TIME....
For some - it's the only season with a good income.

The question is:
What does summer mean for us????

And whatever it means - let's do it right.
If it's traditionally the time to work hard - let's do it.
If it's usually a big vacation - LET'S DO THAT TOO!!!

Let's Do Things RIGHT!

I just need to check, Boss...

There are a lot of businesses that do things
that are - well - unscrupulous (and that's
putting it lightly).

Look at those hedge fund managers being
hauled away by federal agents!!!
They lied to their customers - and look
what it's getting them - possible
YEARS in prison!!!

So please, please, please - make sure
that there's NOTHING going on in this
business that is wrong in any way, OK???

What we have is just too darn precious,
and I never want anything but the best
for us.

Enough said. Just make sure that
we stay on the right side of the law....

How Do Folks Perceive This Business?

So Boss...

When was the last time you checked on how
we're perceived in the world????

Every business has a "COMMON VIEW" that's
held by the community that they serve.

And I'm wondering....

Exactly what does OUR COMMUNITY - the people
and businesses that we serve - think of us???

If they had to put their thoughts about us into
ONE SENTENCE, what would that sentence be?

This is the question you need to go ask.
Ask it of the people who fit two criteria:
1) They are connected, well connected and would
know what the community really thinks
2) They are willing to TELL THE TRUTH to
you when you ask.

So....

Go find out what the world thinks!

It's the LITTLE THINGS, That Matter

One thing you forget, Boss...

This business isn't about BIG THINGS that
are all win or lose....

This business is about LITTLE THINGS that
all have to fit together and work well.

Sometimes you put the emphasis on the BIG THINGS.
And when they don't come together you
think it's the end of the world.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

It's the LITTLE THINGS, the seemingly small
tasks, procedures, and techniques that
really make everything else happen.

So...

Tidy up a few little things today and the
big things will fall into place.

There's no need to plan EVERYTHING OUT!!!!
Leave that for the geeks who can actually
run Microsoft Project!!!!

Just plan out some FIRST STEPS of the one
way that you've chosen to get what you want.

Remember, this is supposed to be EASY!!!!
Don't get all caught up in a big planning
process. Just think of FIRST STEPS.

STEP TWO: Strategizing

Today is STEP TWO in getting what you want, Boss.

And...

STEP TWO is STRATEGIZING.
That's right. Now that you're CLEAR about what you
want - start to kick around ideas about how to get it.
Don't think that there's only ONE WAY - cuz you know
that's just not true....

Instead...

Come up with at least 10 different ways to get what
you want. Let some of them be silly. Let some of them
be easy.

The important part of this step though, is to make
sure that you have MANY WAYS that you can see to get
whatever it is.

So there's step two - STRATEGIZE POSSIBILITIES.

STEP ONE: Get Clear On What You Want

All set to get what you really want, Boss???

OK.

Today we handle STEP ONE.
And STEP ONE is - GET CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT.

This may sound obvious, but it's really a step
that most people forget to do. Most people put
one big wish or goal out there, but they don't
really GET CLEAR about exactly what it will
look like.

So...

In STEP ONE - get really crystal clear on what you
want. Think about what it will look like, feel like,

I think we ought to take a look at exactly what
OUR Competitive Advantages are and then tell
everyone about them.

So...

What is special about us?
What do we do that our competitors don't?
What are the things that really make us
STAND OUT from everyone else?

Let's say you're at a cocktail party and someone
asks about this business of yours, and they
ask "BUT WHY SHOULD SOMEONE BUY FROM YOU?"...
What would you say???

USE IT or LOSE IT!

Every day you can listen to TRAFFIC REPORTS.
Someone collects the info (or flies around a city)
to get the best knowledge possible for commuters.

So let's think about this...

For most people, they don't have an alternative
route to work. Mostly, they're getting the traffic
report so that they'll know how much of a delay there
will be.
AND...
It isn't that they'll actually get out of the house
any earlier - they already have their morning PACKED!!!

So Boss...
Why am I talking about TRAFFIC REPORTS today???

Because they're essentially USELESS!!!!!!

Do we have any "TRAFFIC REPORTS" in our business???
Things that we do just to have information that
we NEVER USE????

Explaining a New Concept

I know this is hard for you to hear, Boss...

BUT...

Sometimes.....

You get a bit exasperated when you're explaining
something to someone and THEY JUST DON'T GET IT!

The concept seems EASY to you.
You've explained it THREE TIMES.
You know of NO OTHER WAY to explain it.

And then - you just SHUT DOWN!

Here's an alternative....

Have the person explain the concept back to you,
as they know it....
Then - with luck - you will be able to find
out where "THE DISCONNECT" is and help them
to understand it from that point forward.

Or....

You can just scream and walk away frustrated.

Is there something you can do that

Where is Your Competition?

Competition has always been easy to see.
In the "old days", you could look in the
phone book to see who your competition was.
BECAUSE....
Who would really go out of their town/city/state/country
to buy something they can get right here????

Well now, Boss...
All that has changed!!!!

Even SERVICE businesses have offshore competition.
Some United States companies and individuals are
getting their TAXES done by services based in ASIA.

This was unimaginable in years past.

So what does that mean for us????

Well - I think we have to look a lot further than
the phone book when we assess our competition.

Lots of Choices

Way Back When - there weren't many choices.

Television - One Screen Size.

And as something evolves - there are more choices.

Look at how many coffee choices we have now...
Heck, you can pick which farm in Sumatra you want
your beans to come from!!!!

BUT....

That's what consumers demand these days.
LOTS of choices....

So...

Do we offer enough choices for our customers?
Are they able to make a choice that's just perfect
for them??

Re-Framing Objections!

Sales trainers talk about
"OVERCOMING OBJECTIONS"...

But Boss....
There are a couple of problems with this concept!

First off....
OBJECTIONS means that the BUYER is OBJECTING
to your desire to sell.
See the first problem - YOUR DESIRE!!!!
When the SELLER pushes - of course the buyer will OBJECT!

Second...
What if these "objections" were to be re-framed
into "areas of education"...
How would that change the story?

Instead of pushing back on objections, wouldn't you
welcome the possibility of EDUCATING???

So much for Sales Trainers!!!!

Keep Up With The News!

There's enough always going on in terms of national and
local news, political news, business news, etc...
But..
You also have to really keep up with industry news,
and any news that affects OUR CUSTOMERS.
That's right...
The news that we need is not only to watch out for us,
it's to keep abreast of what's going on FOR THEM!!!

So...

Let's take a two step approach here, OK???
1) Identify the news areas that we need to keep current
2) Find the best provider (not only in content but delivery
system as well...
3) Block out time in your schedule for NEWS INTAKE!!!

Wouldn't it be nice to have some time set aside just
to take it all in????

Do We Get Caught Up In Traditions?

Happy Cinco de Mayo, Boss!!!

Today, as you may know....
is Cinco de Mayo - the celebration of
THE MARGARITA!!!!!

Well - it may as well be!!!!

Get this - the celebration is supposed to be MEXICAN, right???
The actual origin of it is from CALIFORNIA in the 1860's as
a protest to the French rule of Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo is essentially IGNORED in Mexico.

Mexican Independence day is actually September 16th.

Why mention all of this in a "NOTE FROM YOUR BUSINESS"????
Well - Sometimes we get sucked into traditions, and when we
research them - we find that the tradition isn't well founded.

Remember the story of the woman who always cut a slice off of the
ham before she baked it? Her daughter asked her why - and she didn't
really know. So she called her mother - who had always done the same.
SHE DIDN'T KNOW... So they called the grandmother for the explanation.
And she said:
"My pan was too small - so most hams I had to take a slice off of to fit!"

MAY DAY MAY DAY!!.....or not

Happy May Day, Boss....

You may not know this, but...
In many countries of the world,
today is LABOR DAY!

May Day is celebrated because
this was the start of the
EIGHT HOUR WORK DAY, an absolute
win for the labor movement.

The Industrial Revolution brought along
big factories, and with them - LONG work days.
Some of the companies required 10-16 hour
work days - seven days a week.

Now, the only people that really put in
days like that - are BUSINESS OWNERS
JUST LIKE YOU!!!!

OK - there may be a couple of physicians in
training and a few other jobs that have to
go for a LONG DAY - but for the most part...
It's people like you that continue to work
long after MAY DAY "freed you"!

one thing - and not realize it's impact on another.

Here's an example....

Let's say you're focusing on REVENUE.
Maybe when you do that, you're not focused
enough on CUSTOMERS.

And...

When you DON'T FOCUS ON CUSTOMERS....
There goes the REVENUE!!!!

My suggestion????

ALWAYS - ALWAYS - ALWAYS....
FOCUS on the CUSTOMERS.

If you do that well - everything else will
fall into place.

Have you set up your own ways of remaining
accountable for what you do?

AND...

Is it enough???

Sometimes it's hard to be accountable
only to yourself. You will believe your own
"reasoning" for not completing tasks.
You may be a bit too easy on yourself and let
things slip.

Conversely...

You may be so tough on yourself and your
deadlines that you drive yourself TOO HARD.
Wouldn't it be nice to have someone tell
you to "slow down a bit"???

Focus On the Present!

Hi there, Boss...

There are a lot of people who spend all of their
time in the PAST. Their mind is always
thinking of "What happened before".

And there are also a lot of people who are
constantly thinking about the future. They think
about what will be, or what may be.

Quite frankly....
The best place to remain most of the time
is in the PRESENT. Deal with what's going on
NOW.

Use the PAST to anchor your learning.
Use the FUTURE to create your vision.

But EVERYTHING ELSE has to stay in the PRESENT.

"GOING GREEN"????

So many businesses are doing it!!!!

lot of customers who REALLY want to

There are employees who want to

How About A YOUTUBE Video??

Ya know what I think would be COOL, Boss???

If we were in a VIDEO on YOUTUBE!!!!!

I don't know exactly what we could do,
but I think it would just be AWESOME
to have something there about us.

So let's think about this....

Maybe we could attract customers that way...
Maybe we could attract future employees.
Maybe people could get a better sense of
how we do business and what's unique about us.

The more I think about this idea, the sweeter
it becomes....

How Would Life Be....Without Procrastination?

Happy TAX DAY, Boss...

All over the USA, lots of people will be
in line tonight as they rush to file their
taxes before midnight.

Is there anything that you are always
procrastinating about???

What would life be like if you were
to stop that procrastination???

And go past the obvious that it would

CUSTOMER EDUCATION PROJECT

Hi there, Boss...

I was thinkin'....

You know how everybody uses MS WORD...
AND...
Probably only 2 percent of those people
have any idea of all of the capabilities???

Seriously...

A lot of people have NO CLUE as to all of
the things they can do with that program.

WELL...

I'm wondering if that doesn't apply to us
as well. Do our customers have any idea
as to all of the things that we can do for them?
Do they understand more than 20 percent of
what we can offer????

Habits To Stop Doing!

Hello Boss...

So often, I'm writing to you about things
to ADD to our work together.

Today, I'm going to ask you the opposite!

Is there something that you do, either a
habit that you have, or a way of doing things,
that YOU DON'T REALLY LIKE????

Let's DROP IT!

Yes, DROP IT. Stop doing it. Walk away!

Just remember, that it may not be easy to
change. Some psychologist somewhere said
that it takes about a month to MAKE a new
habit and get it in place. I'm guessing
that it will probably take about a month
to BREAK one as well....
