ICF CertificationI am an ICF-certified Professional Certified Coach(PCC). What does this mean?
The International Coach Federation (ICF) is a regulatory body that has emerged as the official organization of coaches and has created a common language and established professional standards and ethics. I suggest that, when you are considering hiring a professional coach, you look at ICF's Listing of ICF Credentialed Coaches to make sure that person has been certified by this regulatory body.
ICF has established a certified skill set for coaches:
Meeting ethical guidelines and professional standards Establishing a coaching agreement Establishing trust and intimacy with the client Coaching presence Active listening Powerful questioning Direct communication Creating awareness Designing actions Planning and goal setting Managing progress and accountability
I suggest that, when you talk with prospective coaches, you look for someone with this skill set.
ICF issues three levels of certification:
ACC: ACCs are relatively new coaches. They have recently started their businesses and are gaining experience.
PCC: In martial arts terms, PCCs are the 'black belts' of coaching. We know all the moves, are great at what we do, and know how to teach using each person's individual strengths and weaknesses.
MCC: MCCs are the '10th degree black belts.' They are the grand masters.
