Process of Selecting the Right Coach

Attributes of a Great Coach

In my experience, these are the qualities and skill sets of great coaches:

* They are great listeners.
* They believe in their clients deeply.
* They love people.
* They care.
* They love to share and grow.
* They get excited about seeing other people succeed.
* They have been trained and tested in coaching competencies.

Business Coaching Explained

Business coaching is simple. A coach and a client come together to work on one thing: the client's desired result. The relationship between coach and client is friendly and cooperative. Together, they explore the client's current status, where the client wants to go, and how the client can get there.

'Coaching' is not the same as 'consulting.' You need to understand this distinction so you can choose the one most suited to you, your needs, and your goals.

Consultants come with an agenda, plans, and systems. They already 'know' your business and will help you get your business into the 'success formula' they have determined to be correct. You end up implementing their system into your business. Consultants have answers and tell you what to do. They work exclusively on how to make something happen.

Certified coaches enter into a partnership with you, without an agenda. They do not have canned plans and systems, because they want to explore with you what the possibilities are. They help you create your own systems and procedures to fit you. Coaches don't know answers, but involve clients in designing, testing, and reporting on solutions. Coaches work on making sure their clients grow so they can accomplish what they want in the future.

Process of Selecting the Right Coach

Professional, certified coaches are all individuals with their own styles, approaches, and ways of working. Here's a quick process I recommend for finding a coach who's right for you:

1. Know what you want.
2. Find at least three ICF certified coaches by asking for recommendations, looking at listings, or visiting web sites.
3. Interview these coaches (either by telephone or in person).
4. Evaluate your interviews with each one. What is your impression of each coach. How did they make you feel? Did you laugh? Did it feel like work to have the conversation? Did they treat you as you like to be treated? Do you think you will get what you want (step 1) from them?
5. Let it sit for a weekend.
6. Make a decision, and hire a coach.
